A Beautifully Illustrated Version of a Timeless Classic!

This e published version of "A Christmas Carol" is beautifully illustrated and an absolute joy to read. This is the first time I read this book. I expected a revision of Hollywood's version of this story. Obviously, no movie can do justice to any book or novel; this book is no exception. What is excellent about this version is that it gives a brief history of the historical background that Dickens' wrote his work in and the history of this timeless classic. There may be a minor ( and I mean minor issue) on two of the illustrations: Bob Cratchit carrying Tiny Tim on his shoulders and Scrooge raising his salary. The Kindle Fire version of all the illustrations are recreated perfectly. They are partially duplicated on the top third portion and look like the top third of the illustration is above the the whole of the image in the Kindle 3G Keyboard version. I think that the publisher should look into this. This is no reason to avoid purchasing this version. Again, this version is excellent!

LIKE THE FORMAT

There is not exta narration through out which I LOVE! It gives you extras in the front of the book with a lil history, but they left the story untouched which is great. There is just enough illustration to give you a start, but otherwise it leaves the rest to your imagination

A Christmas Carol (1843) by Charles Dickens 5 stars★ and a favorite♥

A Christmas Carol has been a book I've been trying to read for the past few Christmases. I'd start it, but then never finished it. Third times was a charm. I've finally finished it and am glad I read it. It was a good read and now a favorite.

"For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when its mighty Founder was a child Himself."

I really liked Charles Dickens's "Ghost of an Idea." I've watched many different movies that have some form of this story. I liked reading this just as much as watching one of the movie adaptions. This was my first Dickens book that I've read. His writing style in this was poetic I thought. The story is short and broken off in Staves. I think my favorite part was the description of Christmas Day activity during Stave Three: The Second of Three Spirits.

I'll definitely be rereading this in the future and will try to read some of Dickens's other books too. I enjoyed this free kindle illustrated version. It was a nice touch to see the pictures that were made for this original tale.

For American readers, Bernardo Bertolucci's film 1900 is perhaps the comparison that best illuminates this sprawling, turn-of-the-century saga, which is considered to be a masterpiece of contemporary Korean literature. Like that film, this novel tracks a generation of poor villagers and their rich landlords through a period of cultural and social upheaval. The Choi family has ruled over their peasants "for more than a hundred years.'' Though serfdom was abolished in 1893, the superstitious, fatalistic peasants resist change in the social order, preferring to stick with the life they know. They gossip about Lady Yoon, her son Chisoo and Kuchon, Chisoo's secret half-brother, as they go about their hard labor on their small plots of land. Most likely to engage American readers are the machinations of the ambitious servant Guinyo, who schemes to get pregnant and pass the child off as a Choi heir. Many plot threads are left unresolved. The translation, apparently striving for a somber restraint, is flat, and awkwardly integrated flashbacks and shifting points of view make for slow reading. Still, the novel offers an education in Korean history and mores wrapped in the accessible and compelling form of the regional epic.

About the Author
Helen Carey was born in Oxford and lived in London for many years. Before she began writing she had a range of jobs, including tour guide, army officer and management consultant. Her Lavender Road novels were inspired by a chance encounter with a neighbour who showed her the sites of the air-raid shelters on Clapham Common. She now lives in Wales with her husband and their two dogs.

During the dark days and nights of the bombing in London during WWII, a group of women must learn to cope and carry on while the men are otherwise engaged. The women had to learn to survive in a new world. A world once occupied by men. The women must learn to make decisions and turn their lives around not knowing if they will have the men home again. This book describes the fear of sitting in a shelter with the bombs raining down. The loss of life and the homes they had known for generations. The rationing of food and clothing and trying to feed a family. The war was won because of the strength of character of the British people and that includes the women who kept the home fires buring. Let us not forget the women who stayed home, waiting.

I am more than ready for Book 3 of the series!

Enjoyed this Book #2 of the series. Helen Carey gives a really true account of lfe in various parts of the UK during WW2, extreme food rationing, coal for heating homes & cooking. certain bath level of water! UGH! The examples of how many women were treated by their husbands, & thought it was OK for them to do so!. Her characters are authentic real life people. The war changed a lot for women, as so many did mens' work in munitions etc. & they saw there were as able as men for many jobs! Good story, Love this author's authenticity !

I read the first book, Lavender Road and loved it. But the second book, Some Sunny Day, is un-put-downable. I know, that really isn't a word but that is how the book was. I am reminded of Maeve Benchy's books and we all know her books were all fantastic.
