A nice second installment in this new series....

So I very much enjoyed this book. The unfortunate thing about it is that being YA it is a quick, and I mean like 5 hours, read. So now I have to wait who knows how long for "The Reckoning" to come out and wrap things up for me.

This book picks up immediately where the last one left off, and things move at a fairly break neck pace from the get go. The characters are filling out nicely, and a lot of my issues with the first book are being resolved. I will say that the character of Chloe still bugs me here and there, and her obsession with movies and describing things like they were a film alternates between clever and annoying. My favorite part about this book and the first is the taut dynamic between Chloe and Derek which I cannot get enough of. I am glad they were alone and together thru the bulk of the book and we can spy on their relationship becoming more significant. They are two complex characters who play well off each other and have a very believable relationship.

I also found it extremely clever how this book overlaps with her adult novels that take place in the same world. I feel like this is a rare occurence for an author to cross the aisle of adult and YA fiction in the same world. It is smart from a marketing perspective, but also in a carry over way that character's could appear later in The Other world series etc. It would be fun to see them growing up, simultaneously with their YA readers and then show up in the Women of The Other world series.

One final gripe: This book also suffers from the same affliction as the first though, and leaves you hanging on something of a cliff hanger.

One of the best series so far...

Can this series get any better?! I have literally read both The Summoning and The Awakening till the pages are starting to droop and crinkle! I'm on pins and needles waiting for the last book in the series to come out.

The Awakening takes off immediately where The Summoning left off so you're not skimming the first pages trying to get past a long and drugged out reminiscing section. Chloe is now stuck in the lab with a happy Rae, and sulking Tori, whereas the boys are still on the outside. Trying to get out of the lab is nearly impossible until Chloe suggests she go with Dr. Davidoff to try and help find the boys. From there the story really picks up as both Chloe and Tori manage an escape plus more secrets emerge in the lab itself as a demon decides to try and use Chloe to free her and helps/confuses Chloe by giving snippets of information.

The whole team minus Rae finally meets up together, and a strange sort of friendship emerges between Derek and Chloe as they are left on their own when Derek begins changing, and leaves Simon and Tori on the bus. Tori's moods, however, remain the same, and in my personal opinion, she could have been left in the lab. Overall this series is one of my favorites, and I am anxiously awaiting the next book!

Ever since the Edison Group genetically reengineered her (see THE SUMMONING), teen Chloe Saunders her life is out of control. First there is the out of control "dark powers" of being able to raise the dead without trying. Being a necromancer causes havoc with one's social life. Second there are ghosts who are everywhere further devastating her social life.

Having escaped for now and having been betrayed by those she trusted, Chloe is not sure who is friend from foe especially amidst the living. With help from beyond and from the paranormal, Chloe learns more about the Edison group operatives and scientists who are coming for her, dead or alive. At the same time her dad has announced a $500,000 reward for her safe return, which brings out the whackos. Her only hope for survival is her special friends Tori, Derek, and Simon, but that places them in danger.

The second Darkest Powers teen urban fantasy is a terrific tale as the heroine has learned the hard way from her previous escapades trust no one, but to survive the Edison Group Chloe will have to rely on her friends. The story line is fast-paced as supernatural events continual to occur. There is also a hint of romance, but who Chloe chooses between the brothers Derek and Simon remains up in the air as safety is the first requirement. Although it would help to first read THE SUMMONING to better understand how far Chloe has come and how far she must go to survive and not necessarily win, readers will enjoy the paranormal action of THE AWAKENING.

Solid Sparks

Soldiers in World War 2 called them "Dear Johns" - letters written from wives or girlfriends back home who couldn't wait or had found someone else. It's no surprise the "Dear John" from author Nicholas Sparks is filled with distance, longing, and broken hearts.

John Tyree is a rowdy type from North Carolina who straightens out his life by joining the US Army, then tangles it back up on leave when he meets college student Savannah Lynn Curtis. She's a near-perfect straight arrow, and in typical Nicholas Sparks fashion, they manage to exchange an "I love you" by the third date.

Their two week romance consists of walking tours, cheeseburgers, and surfing lessons, but by the time John is packing his suitcase to return overseas, they are vowing eternal love. John promises to write regularly, email, and call when he can, and Savannah promises to wait. Their pledges are easy to keep in the beginning, but - as in the case of many long distance loves - eventually the two start drifting apart.

The "Dear John" letter from Savannah still comes as a surprise to him, but rather than trying to contact his lost love, John signs up for another tour of duty. It takes his father's funeral to bring him back to North Carolina.

Sparks sets up the reunion of the two in a scenario that is rife with possibilities. Savannah's husband isn't home and she surprises John with an offer to cook dinner. In a situation reminiscent of the ill-fated scene in Ethan Frome, the two are alone in the house with all the tension of the love they once shared.

Suffice to say, Edith Wharton would have played it differently - but "Dear John" will satisfy fans of Nicholas Sparks with its short simple style, easy prose, and trademark poignant moments.

You'll really care about the characters!

Reading DEAR JOHN by Nicholas Sparks, it wasn't hard

to figure out that somebody by the name of John (coincidentally

the main character) was going to get a letter from a girl he

loved . . . yet even with that prior knowledge, the book

held my interest because Sparks is such a masterful

storyteller.

As has been the case with virtually all his other books,

Sparks here presents a story with characters that you

really care about . . . I wanted to see what would eventually

become of John Tyree, a guy who didn't have much going

on in his life until he helps Sarah Lynn Curtis retrieve a pocketbook

that she had lost . . . they quickly fall in love; however, shortly

thereafter, John must return to complete his tour of duty with

the army.

A long distance romance ensues, only to have the events

of 9/11 come into play . . . then there's the disease of

John's dad (Asperger's syndrome), as well as other

assorted complications in both their lives, and nothing

happens as smoothly as you would like it to.

DEAR JOHN held my interest until the very end . . . if you're

in the mood for a good, old fashioned romance that's also

a tear jerker, then this is the book for you . . . or you could

always wait for the movie that I'm sure will be developed

in the near future.

Sparks writes masterfully; among the many passages that

caught my attention were the following:

* It's no exaggeration to say that lives are on the line. One wrong decision,

and your buddy might die. It's this fact that makes the army work. That's

the big mistake a lot of people make when they wonder how soldiers

can put their lives on the line day after day or how they can fight for

something they may not believe in. Not everyone does. I've worked with

soldiers on all sides of the political spectrum; I've met some who hated

the army and others who wanted to make it a career. I've met geniuses

and idiots, but when all is said and done, we do what we do for one

another. For friendship. Not for country, not for patriotism, not because

we're programmed killing machines, but because of the guy next to you.

You fight for your friend, to keep him alive, and he fights for you, and

everything about the army is built on this simple premise.

* She smiled, flashing the small gap between her two front teeth. "Exactly.

It can be coins or sports or politics or horses or music or faith . . . the

saddest people I've ever met in life are the ones who don't care deeply about

anything at all. Passion and satisfaction go hand in hand, and without them,

any happiness is only temporary, because there's nothing to make it last.

I'd love to hear your dad talk about coins, because that's when you see a

person at his best, and I've found that someone else's happiness is usually

infectious."

I was struck by her words. Despite Tim's opinion that she was naïve, she

seemed far more mature than most people our age. Then again, considering

the way she looked in her bikini, she probably could have recited the phone

book and I would have been impressed.

* I thought again about the way she'd talked to my father. About the way she

talked to everyone, for that matter, including me. She had the rare ability

to be exactly what people needed when she was with them and yet still

remain true to herself. I couldn't think of anyone who remotely resembled

her in appearance or personality, and I wondered again why she'd taken

a liking to me. We were as different as two people could be. She was a

mountain girl, gifted and sweet, raised by attentive parents, with a desire

to help those in need; I was a tattooed army grunt, hard around the edges,

and largely a stranger in my own home. Remembering how she'd been with

my dad, I could tell how gracefully her parents had raised her. And as she

sat beside me, I found myself wishing that I could be more like her.

Every time I read a Nicholas Sparks book I remember how lazy I am for not writing a romance novel yet. Then I remember I'm on the 20th chapter of my fantasy novel. Sorry for the repetitive (ostinato) reviews of Sparks' books but I really do love them all.

Absolutely phenomenal!! Finally, there's someone with no ulterior motive confirming what you've known all along. It's not rocket science-you are what you eat and diet and disease go hand-in-hand. It almost seems too good to be true and yet we know the body was designed to heal itself.

Changed my life

Although there is no such thing as absolute proof, the studies contained in this book were convincing enough that even before I was done reading it, I decided to adopt a vegan or plant-based diet. I figured I'd done enough damage with a less than healthy diet and it was time to make repairs. My health has steadily improved ever since. I used to take Alka-Selzter almost daily for stomach upset and now I don't use it anymore. My cholesterol is normal again (was too high), and I rarely get sick anymore. Anyway, this book was the catalyst that gave me motivation to mend my ways and start eating more vegetables and no dairy or animal products.
